
Negative fettles can be removed through cyphers, abilities, or finding a place to Sleep. They may be positive, negative, or status changes and are indicated by small colored arrows on characters. Fettles are status effects or conditions. This can only be done by equipping items or gaining abilities. A glowing green icon next to the name of a skill indicates that you have boosted it beyond the Specialized training level. Skills can also be reduced to Inability level, which confers penalties when using it. Skills have the following levels: Novice, Trained and Specialized, each conferring greater benefits. Keep this in mind when you need a little extra boost to succeed at a task. You can use certain items and abilities even during conversations or when interacting with objects. Active abilities can be triggered, while passive abilities grant permanent bonuses. Those companions will offer new options and opportunities, so choose them carefully. You can only bring three companions with you at a time. Training in the Concentration skill allows you to shrug off those penalties.
Bonded Items are a special type of equipment that inflict penalties alongside powerful bonuses. Their skills might give you the advantage you need. Be sure to use your companions to assist when completing tasks. Shins are sometimes needed during conversations – typically, for bribing the underhanded. Be sure to use cyphers frequently or trade them between party members to stave off Cypher Sickness. Sometimes failing a task can lead to more interesting results than if you had succeeded. These are not cyphers, so they don’t affect your limit. It grants free levels of Effort or reduces the cost to activate abilities. “Edge” in each Stat Pool acts like a discount when using points from that pool.
Missing something? You can press the highlight button to view all interactive characters and objects in the area. Your Character screen shows all of your abilities and skills, as well as their current training levels. The game will automatically save every time you enter a new area, but you can manually save your progress from the Pause Menu as well. It is updated automatically any time you make progress in the story. If you find yourself wondering where to go or what to do, check the Journal screen to refresh your memory. Some of them can give you special bonuses. New reflections can appear in the Labyrinth based on your actions in the real world. Your Dominant Tides will not stop you from taking any paths or picking any options in conversations, but they can influence how others respond to you in subtle ways. Choosing certain options in conversations will influence and potentially change your Dominant Tides. Some characters will be more cooperative if they've seen you come back from the dead. Usually you won't get a chance to return later. When someone tells you to take care of unfinished business before leaving a location, take heed. Think carefully about what secrets you give away. Be careful if you’re the type of player who chooses every dialogue option available when speaking to characters. They can yield interesting ideas or a new perspective on an objective, and you can learn more about them and their backstories. New and interesting things may have appeared since your last visit, but getting there can be a challenge. You may wish to revisit the Labyrinth from time to time. Don't worry about missing something the first time around - you can always play again for a different experience. You won't be able to see everything in the game in a single playthrough. They will grow to love or hate you over time. Your companions will remember what you say and what you do. New paths and options can be hidden in out-of-the-way places.
